(October 10, 2013) -- There aren't many firsts when you're playing for the 75th time. But this is a first for this millennium. Groesbeck is in possession of the Navasota River sign. The Goats ending a 13-game losing streak to Mexia last season.
"I've grown up watching Friday night games against Mexia and we've never been able to come out on top," said Groesbeck quarterback and linebacker Sterling Cable. "And then finally to be on the team that gets to come out with a solid victory like last year was really, was a great feeling."
"The neat thing about the game is to watch our townspeople and our fans react, our kids react to that victory," said Groesbeck head coach Kodi Crane. "That's something they haven't had the opportunity to do very often. And just to see them savor the moment and cherish that moment was a near site to see."
"This has been, kind of a, they get the last word over us for the past year, but, it's been kind of bad but we hope we get it back Friday," said Mexia running back and defensive back Kaylon Watson.
It's a reversal of roles this season, Groesbeck looking to hang on to the sign and Mexia trying to win it back.
"Yeah, it's strange not having it here," said Mexia head coach Lamonte Chambers. "We'd like to get it back, that's something that we've come accustomed to having it in our hallway. We want to go back and get our sign and bring it home."
"Pride, pride to go back and say the next year I have the sign and take it from you," said Mexia receiver and defensive back Danny Huckaby.
"Expectations can't be any higher. We have a lot of people that really expects a lot from us," said Groesbeck defensive lineman Tyrell Henderson. "We have a lot of people that's on our side on this thing. It's all about coming out and executing and doing our job right."
"There's not that many people in this town that's beaten Mexia more than twice," said Groesbeck tight end and defensive lineman Dalton Longenbaugh. "Back-to-back years, we're going to try and do that. We want to beat them back-to-back years. That's our plan. We had a great win last year and we're going to try and build on that win this year."
