WACO (February 28, 2013) -- Michael Powell has seen this Connally team grow since he was a freshman on varsity.
From making the playoffs as a sophomore, and advancing to the regional quarterfinals as a junior.
Now a senior, Powell and the rest of his teammates were back in a familiar spot. Facing a district foe for the chance to go to the regional tournament.
"We was in that position last year with La Vega," said senior point guard Michael Powell. "And we knew what the outcome of that was and we didn't want to feel that again. So we knew we had to win and play hard."
"We learned from that, we practiced way harder than we did last year. We knew what we were doing more," said senior guard/forward Chris Harrison.
The road to the regional tournament hasn't been an easy one. The Cadets finished third out of district 17-3A.
"It changed our whole attitude. We knew we had to work harder in practice, no playing around and stuff," said senior guard Skylar Hadden.
Getting to Huntsville has been the goal of this senor laden team since the beginning of the season. If you need a reminder, just look at the white board in the locker room.
"From the beginning of the year our goal was to get to Huntsville. So in our locker room, it's written Huntsville," said head coach Quinton Snell. "Throughout the process, throughout the journey that was the whole purpose behind this season was to get to this point right now."
"We knew we had to practice harder to get to where we want to be. We had a goal this year to go to Huntsville," said Powell. "It had been our goal all season, we had been chasing it all season."
Back in the regional tournament for the first time since 2008, Friday brings a new goal ahead for Powell and the rest of the Cadets, to upset the number one team in the state.
Connally plays Houston Yates Friday, 8:00 PM, at Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State in Huntsville.
