(May 29, 2014) Three times would be nice, but twice is just fine.
The Crawford softball team won its second 2A state title in three years with a 5-3 win over East Bernard Thursday, one year after the Lady Pirates were upset in the regional final.
"We wanted three straight, but I don't care, we won this year, this is fine," 2A tournament MVP Morgan Groppe said.
East Bernard junior pitcher Samantha Show was the Gatorade Player of the Year in 2013 after pitching at 5A Pearland. She has been dominant since transferring to East Bernard. Show has not allowed an earned run all season and just 10 hits heading into the state championship.
But Crawford, with three players headed to Baylor, got to Show early. In the bottom of the first, Gropped crushed a pitch to the centerfield wall to score Jessica Thomchesson and give Crawford a 1-0 lead.
After East Bernard tied it up, the Lady Pirates regained the lead for good in the third after Ashton Chambers' sac fly that scored Groppe.
The Lady Pirates scored one run in each of the next three innings to take a 5-3 lead into the top of the 7th.
"I told them, you know what, everybody's beatable, everyone's a human being, they're all fallible. Let's go earn this. Our biggest goal was to put the ball in play and not strike out a bunch and I think we did a good job of that," Crawford head coach Kirk Allen said.
East Bernard loaded the bases with two outs, but Korie Dutschmann got a fly out to end the game and win the state title.
Crawford won the state championship in 2012 with a 5-1 win over Alpine.
