WACO (May 14, 2013) -- Waco ISD is seeking a new director of athletics after Johanna Denson announced Tuesday she is leaving the district to take a similar post at Pflugerville ISD.
Denson has been serving as athletics director at Waco ISD since April 2003.
Pflugerville, located northeast of Austin, serves approximately 23-thousand students. The district features two Class 5-A and one Class 4-A high schools.
"I am excited for Coach Denson," said Pat Atkins, president of the Waco ISD Board of Trustees.
"Her talents bode well for the athletic programs in Pflugerville. We wish her all the best."
A 2013 state championship in soccer by University High and a 2006 state runner-up finish in football by Waco High are two of many highlights that stand out during Denson's tenure. But she also had success in strengthening girls' athletics at Waco ISD which this year had playoff teams in basketball, soccer and softball.
"Coach Denson has served Waco ISD well and now has a fantastic and more challenging opportunity a few miles down the road with schools that compete at the 5-A level," said Waco ISD Superintendent Bonny Cain.
"It was a privilege for me to join her on the sideline last month to experience the excitement of a state championship."
Because of the timing of Denson’s departure, Cain says the district may choose to hire an interim athletic director since many potential candidates may already be under contract for the 2013-14 school year.
