(February 28, 2013) -- The Mexia girls basketball team made school history by advancing to its first ever state tournament.
Now the Lady Blackcats are in line to make even more history for the program.
Brechelle Beachum scored 16 points and Na'Teshia Owens scored 14 to lead Mexia past Krum 50-41 Thursday in the Class 3A girls' state semifinals.
Owens scored eight in the fourth quarter. Ariel Ballard added 10 points for Mexia (35-3).
Julia Schmaltz had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Krum (29-7), which had pulled within 36-33 on Rachel Wallace's 3-pointer on the final shot of the third quarter. Owens scored six points to open the fourth as Mexia pushed its lead to 43-35 with five minutes left and Krum never recovered.
Wallace scored 15 points for Krum, which committed 28 turnovers that Mexia converted into 23 points.
Mexia advance to the 3A title game to face Kennedale, an 87-66 winner over Smithville, Saturday at 10:00 am.
