Austin (June 1, 2012) -- For the second consecutive year, the Midway softball team's season in the 4A state semifinals.
Smithson Valley used an 8-run first inning to beat the Pantherettes 11-9 in the 4A state semifinals Friday afternoon at McCombs Field in Austin.
Midway took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first, before the Lady Rangers scored eight runs on two hits and four Midway errors in the bottom of the frame. In the top of the second, Midway scored two runs on a throwing error to close the gap to 8-5. But Smithson Valley used an RBI double to make it 9-5.
Callee Guffey drew a bases loaed walk in the third, plating Amy Fiend to make it 9-6. Once again the Lady Rangers responded in the bottom half of the inning. A two-out triple followed by a single brought home the 10th run of the game for Smithson Valley. The Lady Rangers 11th run came in the fifth, but Midway would rally with 3 runs in the final two innings. Midway would get two on in the top of the seventh, down 11-9, but couldn't push across the runs.
Midway ends the year at 34-9.
