Portland, Ore. (August 17, 2011) -- One inning dashed the dreams of a 12th Little League World Series title for the Midway 12-year-old All-Star softball team.
Sterling, Illinois put up a 7-run third inning to beat Midway 7-5 to claim its first ever Little League World Series title Wednesday in Portland, Oregon.
Midway built a three run lead in the first three innings. Taylor Ellis delivered a 2-out RBI double to score Chandler Coskrey. Ellis was caught in a rundown between second and third to record the final out. Midway made it 2-0 in the top of the second, on a Jordan Baugh RBI triple to plate Katie Guffey. Midway increased the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third on an Ellis sac fly to score Coskrey.
But in the bottom of the third Sterling loaded the bases with no outs, and scored its first run on an error. An RBI single by Nadia Trujillo cut the Midway lead to 3-2. Sterling tied it at 3-3 following and Emily Berogan single to center. Sterling took the lead for good on a Kylie Burkett RBI single.
Midway scored two runs in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 7-5, but that's the closest Midway would get.
