Waco (August 9, 2011) -- The Southwest Region Little League Baseball champion will be decided between Texas East and Louisiana. Tuesday afternoon at Norcross Stadium in Waco, Texas the Louisiana state champion, Lafayette Little League beat New Mexico 14 to 6 in the first semi-final while Pearland Maroon Little League edged past Colorado 5-4 in the other semi-final.
Altamont Little League from Albuquerque jumped out to a 2 - 0 lead in the opener on a first inning solo homer by Jack Pineda and a bases loaded fielders choice by Ryan Phillips in the second. A Michael Guidry rbi double in the bottom of the second got the scoring started for Louisiana then the all-stars from Lafayette Little League took the lead on a two run double by Ethan Hines in the third. A three run homer by Caesar Garcia in the fourth gave the lead back to New Mexico but Austin Primeaux's 3-run homer in the 4th got the lead back for Louisiana and Joseph Battaglia added a grand slam in the 5th to lead Louisiana to their 14-6 victory.
The second semi-final was more of a nail bitter with Texas East scoring two runs in the first thanks to two New Mexico errors. North Boulder Little League got one of those runs back in the bottom of the first on an rbi single by Max Bajza only to give the run back with another error in the top of the second. Colorado then took a 4-3 lead in the fourth by taking advantage of a walk, two hit batsmen and a single, but three straight singles by Texas East in the top of the fifth set-up Pearland Maroon for two runs that scored on a wild pitch and an overthrow from the catcher back to the pitcher. Nicholas Landrum and Jacob Whitehead then made sure of the 5 - 4 Texas East victory by combining to strike out 6 of the last 10 Colorado batters.
Louisiana and Texas East will now face off in the championship game Thursday night at 7-pm. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
