(October 14, 2013) -- The Waco Independent School District Athletic Department will host the “Hall of Fame Game” on Friday, October 18, 7:30 p.m., when the University Trojans meet the Waco Lions on the gridiron. The football game will serve as a backdrop for the Waco ISD Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony. This year, two former Waco ISD football players will be enshrined.
Derrick Johnson, a 2001 graduate of Waco High, played linebacker for the University of Texas, twice earning All-American honors. In 2005, he was a first-round (15th overall) draft pick by the Kansas City Chiefs where he currently plays as a linebacker.
LaDainian Tomlinson graduated from University High in 1996 and played college football for Texas Christian University. He spent 11 years in the National Football League where he was a first-round draft pick (fifth overall) by the San Diego Chargers. He retired from the NFL in 2011 after playing his final two seasons with the New York Jets.
Prior to the Friday’s game, a reception will be held for the inductees, their families and current members of the Waco ISD Athletic Hall of Fame. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the WISD Stadium Conference Room, located at the north end zone complex. Former inductees who will be in attendance include: Walter Abercrombie, Alfred Anderson, Todd Haney, David “Bubba” Hicks, Lewis H. Ritcherson II, Maggie Stinnett and Pat Zachry.
