University Breaks Curse, Ready for 1st Ever State Trip

WACO (April 16, 2013) -- Even the University boys' soccer team itself can't believe what it's hearing on the radio.

Being the talk of the town isn't something the Trojans are used to.
"I'm so used to going that far and getting disappointed," said University forward Jon Lozano.

"We've been cursed the last few years," University goalie Adrian Barragan said.

Saturday, down 1-0 with 18 seconds to play, the Trojans season was about to end in the regional round again, for the fifth straight season.

"I was already kinda losing hope a little," Lozano said.

But with time winding down, Michael Solis saved the game and the season.

"Eighteen seconds left, it was like a movie. You don't expect it, but when it goes in, butterflies kick in, tears kick in," Solis said.

"Every one of our kids was crying," University head coach Mike Chapman said. "They knew they had just been given another chance. There's not way they were going to let it slip away again."

That goal forced overtime and University won 5-3 in a shootout, becoming the first team ever* from Waco to reach the state tournament.

"There's coaches who spend their entire career and never get to the state tournament," Chapman said. "After 21 years, it's finally sweet to be there."

"We finally broke that curse and we're finally relieved," Barragan added. "But, it's not it. It's unfinished business."

Their curse is broken, and the Trojans say destiny has been awakened.

"Sometimes everything just seems to fall into place and go right to get you there and that's been one of those years for us," Chapman said.

"I really hope it's the start of a new tradition going to state every year and winning state every year," Lozano said.

University opens state tournament play against Mesquite Poteet Thursday at 6 pm in Georgetown.
