WEST (May 24, 2012) -- Heading into the regional semifinals the fact West hasn't lost a game in the playoffs is a nice little feat. The fact West hasn't given up a run is astonishing.
"That's your plan going into the game is not giving up any runs. For the most part this year we usually give up one or two runs and outscore the opponent, said head coach Cory Beckham. "But the pitching has been amazing, the defense has been amazing behind it and they work together. And when you do that usually the opponent is not going to score many runs."
"I knew it was possible. Deep pitching staff that we have," said Senior pitcher Zack Meador. "We have six real good pitchers that can throw the ball. We've just been practicing hard and we've been doing good."
The staff ace is Kolby Carpenter. The Oklahoma signee pitched a no-hitter against Burleson Centennial in the regional quarterfinals.
"It's the first one I've thrown in awhile since I can remember. We just went out there and played good defense," said Senior pitcher Kolbey Carpenter. "That's really what the key was to the game. I didn't even actually know it until after the game."
The Trojans success has been more than Carpenter this season. They credit the maturation of some of the younger players along with Senior leadership.
"Kolbey's our team leader, especially on the mound. When he's on there then everyone feels confident," said Beckham. "But this year's been a little different than the others went. When the other guys take the mound there seems to be a sense of confidence with anyone that's out there."
"Our defense has been amazing," said Meador. "If it wasn't for our defense our pitching wouldn't be as good as it is."
"We have good team chemistry right now," said Carpenter. "I think that's what helped us pull through to get us where we are now."
