WACO (October 18, 2013)—The Baylor University Board of Regents voted Friday to begin phase two of construction of the school’s $18.1 million track and field stadium along the Brazos River on the far east side of the 93-acre BU stadium property.

The stadium, designed by the same firm as the school’s new on-campus football stadium, will accommodate 5,000 spectators and competitors, Baylor said.

The second phase of construction includes a 10,300-square-foot team building with hydrotherapy pools, a training room, offices and meeting rooms, storage space and improved landscaping.

Regents approved the first phase of the project in May, including a 6,000-square-foot team facility and a 13,500-square-foot indoor practice facility.

The facility is scheduled for completion next fall.

Baylor Regents also recognized former Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Griffin was among eight individuals and two couples honored with the school’s Meritorious Achievement Award at a dinner Thursday night.

Griffin, Baylor’s first and only Heisman Trophy winner and now quarterback of the Washington Redskins received the school’s Distinguished Achievement Award.
