SAN ANTONIO (February 11, 2013) -- The 40th-ranked Baylor men’s golf team is in fourth place after playing two rounds on Monday at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational. Kyle Jones leads the Bears and is in third place individually.
Baylor posted a two round total of 9-over-par 577, which puts the Bears six shots back from the leader, No. 36 North Texas (3-over 571). Baylor is also trailing No. 44 Oklahoma (6-over 574) and UTSA (7-over 575).
“We are in decent shape,” head coach Greg Priest said. “I feel like the guys played hard today. They made a few mistakes, but with it being the first tournament of the spring it is kind of expected. We are still a little rusty, but overall I thought we did some good things.”
Jones shot a 2-under-par 69 followed by a round of 70, and he is in third place overall at 3-under par 139. Jones is one stroke behind co-leaders Rodolfo Cazaubon of North Texas and Ryan Werre of UTSA at 4-under 138.
Jones’ nine birdies in two rounds with three on the final nine led the way to his 3-under finish for the day. He was also the only Baylor golfer to post a round under par during Monday’s 36 holes.
Sophomore Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen is tied for ninth after posting a 2-over 144, followed by Filippo Zucchetti, ranked 82nd nationally by Golfstat, who is tied for 26th after posting a two-round total of 5-over-par 147. Freshman Andreas Gjesteby, who is competing as an individual, is also tied for 26th, while senior Ryan O’Rear and sophomore Niclas Mansson finished the day 6-over par (148) and are tied for 34th.
“We have just got to make few corrections and try to not make as many big numbers tomorrow and we should be fine,” Priest said.
The final round of the UTSA Oak Invitational will tee off at 7:30 a.m. CT Tuesday.
