Baylor Grad Makes Dream a Reality at Indy 500

FORT WORTH (June 13, 2013) -- James "Sulli" Sullivan has come a long way since his days at Baylor.

"I was the Baylor mascot. The guy that ran around in the fuzzy suit, that was me," Sulli said.

And now, he can be found spending every day on a race track.

"First time I saw a car go 180 past a chain linked fence and I thought, 'ok, I've got to be a part of this somehow," Sulli said.

So he did anything he could to satisfy his need for speed.

His first trip to watch the Indianapolis 500 he was short on money, so he walked five miles from his hotel to the speedway.

At another race, he made a fake media pass just to get inside.

"That's how I got into the garage and began to stalk every team owner in here, shake their hand and try to put names with faces," he said.

Sulli faced plenty of rejection, but made enough friends that he landed a job in motorcross.

"That was really where I cut my teeth and understood how does this all work," Sulli said.

But his goal was always being a team owner at the Indianapolis 500 and in 2011, he got his chance.

Sulli teamed up with former IndyCar champion Jimmy Vasser to form KVSH racing.

"The dream was getting there and competing," Sulli said. It wasn't winning it. That truthfully was never the goal for me."

But two weeks ago, it happened. Sulli became one of the youngest owners to win the Indianapolis 500.

"I was standing there and said somebody please show me what to do because I was a 5-year-old kid lost in a mall at that point," Sulli said.

For the first time, Sulli wasn't dreaming.

"It's just one of those things where I had to say, check yourself for a minute because you're here and you did it," he said.

And with his dreams in the rear view mirror, he can finally slow down and enjoy the ride.
