WACO (April 19, 2013) -- Tied 2-2 after Fences, the No. 1 seeded Baylor Hunter Seat team surged past No. 9 UT-Martin in Flat for a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon, advancing to the semifinals of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association Championship at Extraco Events Center.
“That was a little closer than we wanted it to be,” head coach Ellen White said. “Luckily they didn’t take advantage of our mistakes. We just have to do what we are capable of and the rest will take care of itself. We will be ready to go tomorrow.”
Samantha Schaefer won both of her points for BU on the afternoon by a combined 74 points.
The Bears and Skyhawks were tied 2-2 after Fences. Schaefer’s 177 was match’s highest score, while Taylor Brown totaled a 155 for the other BU point.
Brown garnered a tie with a 147 to keep the match squared at two before UTM recorded a 3-2 lead. Baylor would grab the next two points off Melanie Appel’s 157 and Schaefer’s 174 for the 4-3 victory.
“Auburn is riding very well,” White said. “We squared-off last year in the semifinals and won, so we are aiming for the same result.”
The Bears and Tigers will begin riding at 9:00 a.m. and start with Flat, while Fences is set to begin at 11 a.m. The winner of BU/AU will take on the winner of South Carolina/Georgia for the Hunter Seat championship at 1:30 p.m.
