(October 27, 2013) The Baylor men’s golf team is joining SMU to co-host the 2013 Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, which will be played Monday and Tuesday at Dallas’ Royal Oaks Country Club. The 54-hole tournament will be played on the par-71, 7,068 yard course.
The sixth-annual event features a field of 12 schools, including eight teams ranked in the top-50 in the latest GolfStat rankings. No. 22 Baylor will be competing against No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 11 Stanford, No. 12 Oklahoma, No. 18 New Mexico, No. 38 SMU and No. 44 GRU Augusta, as well as Ohio State, UT Arlington and Sam Houston State.
The Bears lineup features four of the five players who helped Baylor finish tied for second at its last tournament, the Rod Myers Invitational. Senior Jerry Ruiz, juniors Kyle Jones and Filippo Zucchetti and sophomore Andreas Gjesteby return to the lineup, while junior Niclas Mansson and sophomore Charles Neel White will join the lineup.
For the first time this season, the Bears will be playing in a six-count-five event, meaning six players will compete for each team and the best five scores each round will be added for the team score. Most tournaments are five-count-four events.
Jones, Ruiz and Zucchetti all finished in the top 20 individually in the Rod Myers Invitational. Both Jones and Ruiz have had two top-15 finishes in three tournaments so far this season, including most recently placing third and eighth, respectively.
Monday‘s first round beings with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CT. The Bears tee off on holes seven through 12. The second round will be a shotgun start directly immediately completion of the first round. Tee times for Tuesday’s final round will be decided after the first two rounds.
