WACO (August 24, 2012) -- Baylor men’s golf head coach Greg Priest announced the team’s 2012-13 schedule on Friday. The Bears are slated for 11 regular-season tournaments, including trips to Hawai’i and Japan.
Baylor enters the season having played in 15 consecutive NCAA Regionals, giving the Bears one of the nation’s longest active streaks. Priest, who is in his 10th year at Baylor, led the Bears to an 11th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Central Regional.
“We’re looking forward to the upcoming year, and we’ve got an exciting schedule,” Priest said. “Going to Japan will be a great experience for the guys and a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us.”
Baylor opens the season with a trip to Tanagura, Japan, to play in the 2012 Topy Cop (Sept. 11-13). The Bears will be competing against Oregon State, San Diego and Pacific, as well as a number of teams from Japan.
BU plays in New Mexico’s William H. Tucker Invitational (Sept. 28-29) and Duke’s Rod Myers Invitational (Oct. 13-14) before returning to host the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas. The tournament will be the first of five in-state events for the Bears in 2012-13.
Baylor wraps up the fall season with a trip to Kauai, Hawai’i, to play in the Warrior Wave Princeville Intercollegiate (Nov. 5-7) hosted by Hawai’i and Pepperdine.
“Our tournament is one of the strongest fields we’ve had since I’ve been here,” Priest said, “and then being able to finish up the fall in Hawai’i will be a treat for the guys.”
The Bears open the spring season with three straight in-state tournaments. Baylor plays in the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational (Feb. 11-12) at Oak Hill Country Club in San Antonio, followed by the Redstone Collegiate Championship (Feb. 22-24) hosted by Rice and Houston, and the Border Olympics (March 15-16) in Laredo, Texas.
“We’ve got a lot of in-state tournaments we normally go to,” Priest said, “but we’ve also got a lot of special events with being able to go to Japan, Hawai’i and Augusta, and we’ve got a really competitive schedule for the guys we have coming back.”
Baylor then heads to the Desert Shootout (March 21-23), which is hosted by University of Denver at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz., and the Augusta State Invitational (March 31-April 1) at Forest Hills Country Club in Augusta, Ga.
The Bears’ final regular-season tournament is Texas’ Morris Williams Intercollegiate (April 13-14) at the UT Golf Club. The Big 12 Championship, hosted by Kansas State, is scheduled for April 21-24 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Baylor returns seven letterwinners from a season ago, but the Bears will be looking to replace 2012 Big 12 Conference individual champion Joakim Mikkelsen. BU welcomes a trio of freshmen in Andreas Gjesteby (Oslo, Norway), Scott Terrell (Houston, Texas) and Charles Neel White (Austin, Texas).
“There are some holes to fill.” Priest said. “Losing our top guy in Joakim, that’s a tough one to replace, but we just need some guys to step up. We got a lot of experience out of the freshmen last year, and with all of those guys coming back, I think we’ve got a chance to be really good this year.”
Returning for the Bears are seniors Ryan O’Rear, Jerry Ruiz and Matthew Seligmann, and sophomores Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen, Kyle Jones, Niclas Mansson and Filippo Zucchetti.
