HUTCHINSON, Kan. (April 22, 2013) -- Baylor is in fourth place after the first day at the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Bears shot 17-over-par 297 in the first round and were 10-over-par with four holes remaining in the second round when play was suspended due to darkness on Monday.
The six teams that were unable to complete their second rounds will resume play at 11 a.m. CT Tuesday, and all nine teams will begin the third round at 1 p.m. The fourth and final round remains scheduled for Wednesday.
“We got off to a really good start this morning, we were playing pretty well and had some momentum, but then we hit a one-hour rain delay and we really just didn’t have it when we came back out,” head coach Greg Priest said. “The conditions were really good most of the day, but then a front blew in and it got really cold and really windy. We’ve just hung around and been able to move up, but it’s going to be a tough finish tomorrow.”
The three teams that were able to finish all 36 holes are atop the leaderboard. Texas (+11, 571) leads, while Oklahoma State (+17, 577) is six strokes back in second place and TCU (+18, 578) is in third place, seven shots back of the lead and nine strokes ahead of the Bears.
Niclas Mansson (+2) is tied for fourth place individually after shooting a team-best even-par 70 in the first round and playing the first 16 holes of the second round at 2-over. Mansson was one of only eight golfers to shoot even-par or better in the first round, and he’s five strokes behind tournament leader Brandon Stone (-3, 137) of Texas.
Ryan O’Rear (+8) shot 3-over-par 73 in the first round and is 5-over through 16 holes in his second round. Filippo Zucchetti (+8) bounced back from an 8-over-par 78 in the first round to play the first 16 holes of the second round at ever-par, and he’s tied with O’Rear in 23rd place.
“Niclas played really well this morning, and we definitely needed him to do that,” Priest said. “Ryan really battled. He made a quadruple bogey on his second hole of the day and he just battled all day to get back to 3-over, so that was really good. It’s a tough golf course, the conditions are pretty rough, and we’re grinding it out to do our best to try to make as many pars as we can.”
Kyle Jones (+9) played the first 18 holes at 6-over-par 76 and is 3-over with four holes remaining in his second round, while Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen (+13) shot 8-over 78 in the first round and is 5-over with four holes remaining in the second round. Jones is tied for 26th and Bjerch-Andresen is tied for 35th in the 45-player field.
