(April 16, 2014) The sixth-ranked Baylor men’s tennis (21-5, 4-1) topped No. 7 Texas (19-4, 3-1), 5-2, to claim a share of the Bg12 regular season title on Wednesday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
Baylor jumped on the Longhorns early sweeping the doubles point. It was only the fourth time this season BU has won all three doubles matches, but the 20th time the Bears have claimed the initial point.
Diego Galeano and Tony Lupieri were the first Baylor pairing off court after securing an 8-3 victory over Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff at the No. 2 spot. BU clinched the point with the 42nd-ranked duo of Mate Zsiga and Patrick Pradella’s upset victory over 12th-ranked Lloyd Glasspool and Soren Hess-Olesen 8-6, on court one. Baylor completed the sweep with another 8-6 victory on court three where Julian Lenz and Michel Dornbusch got past David Holiner and Jacoby Lewis.
In singles play, No. 12 Lenz continued to build momentum for the Bears with a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court two over 38th-ranked Glasspool to go up 2-0 in the match. No. 112 Michel Dornbusch pulled the Bears within a point of clinching the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Clement Homs at the bottom of the lineup.
Texas answered back with a win on court one as 19th-ranked Hess-Olesen bested 28th-ranked Patrick Pradella 7-6(3), 6-3 to bring the score to 3-1.
Baylor then struck again on court four for the match deciding point with a 6-3, 6-3 Zsiga victory over No. 91 Goldhoff. The BU junior claimed the match with an ace up the middle.
The final two matches left on court both went on to finish in third-set super tiebreakers. No. 29 Galeano clinched his match on court three, earning a 6-7(4), 6-3, 10-4 win over Berkowicz, before Lupieri fell to Nick Naumann 3-6, 7-6(1), 10-8.
Baylor can still claim the regular season title outright with a loss by Texas (at Texas Tech) and Oklahoma (at Oklahoma State).
In between doubles and singles play, seniors Michel Dornbusch, Patrick Pradella and Robert Verzaal were honored in a Senior Day Celebration.
