WACO (September 20, 2013) -- Baylor men’s tennis advanced five competitors to the round of 16 in the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate on Friday at the Jim and Nell Hawkins Indoor Facility.
The event was scheduled to be played at the Hurd Tennis Center, but was moved indoors due to rain.
In first round singles, No. 79 Tony Lupieri topped Louisiana’s Jake Wynan, 6-4, 6-4. Top seeded and 16th-ranked Patrick Pradella got past UT Arlington’s Carlos Arbiza 6-2, 6-1, while No. 60 Mate Zsiga advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Thomas Stillman of UTSA.
Diego Galeano recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Daniel Echeverry of UT Arlington. The country’s 38th-ranked player and the tournament No. 2 seed Julian Lenz was the last Baylor player to advance with a straight set 6-0, 6-0 win over Oklahoma’s Sam Grey.
Freshman Vince Schneider dropped the first match of his collegiate career with a 6-7 (3), 6-7 (4) loss to sixth-seeded and 99th-ranked Alvaro Nazal of Gonzaga.
In doubles play two of the three Baylor teams advanced. The No. 54 pairing of Diego Galeano and Mate Zsiga got past Mauricio Lopez and Damian Fairinola of Louisiana-Lafayette, 8-4. BU’s Julian Lenz and Tony Lupieri then made quick work of UT Arlington’s Francesco Migliano and Stefan Williams winning 8-2.
Baylor’s third and final pairing of Patrick Pradella and Vince Schneider dropped their match against ULL’s Hunter Johnson and Yates Johnson by a score of 8-6.
