Baylor Soccer Closes Season with Win Over TCU

WACO (October 27, 2012) -- On a blustery Friday night at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field, the Baylor soccer team secured the No. 2 seed in next week’s Big 12 Championship with a 2-0 victory over TCU.

With the win, the Bears improved to 14-1-4 on the season and 5-0-3 in Big 12 play, while also setting the program record for shutouts in a season. TCU was Baylor’s 12th opponent to fail to score in 2012. That mark passes the 11 shutouts posted by the 1998, 2010 and 2011 squads.

“Tonight, we continued to do what we do best,” head coach Marci Jobson said. “Our back line just played a real steady game. It was great to go get a lead early, but even after that we were relentless.”

The early lead came in the fifth minute of action as Bri Campos stole the ball from a TCU defenseman and rocketed in a shot to the far post from 18-yards out. It is the second goal of the season for the freshman, who also had the game-winner vs. Texas Tech on Oct. 5.

“I thought Bri had an awesome game and has had an awesome season,” Jobson said. “She has worked extremely hard on her finishing in the past weeks. She buried that goal with her left foot, which isn’t her strong foot.”

Campos’ goal would prove to be the only score necessary as the BU defense held the Horned Frogs to only three shots, none on goal, in the contest.

However, not to be outdone by her younger sister, Larissa Campos scored on a penalty kick in the 31st minute to extend the Baylor lead to 2-0. Following a handball by TCU in the penalty box, Campos slotted the penalty kick opportunity into the bottom right-hand corner of the net out of the reach of TCU goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold.

“Larissa came in and loves penalty kicks,” Jobson said. “She stepped right up to finish that one and did a good job with it. Larissa likes the pressure, which is huge in those situations.”

The Bears had a multitude of other chances to score in the first half as both L. Campos and Dana Larsen had free kicks from about 25 yards out that both went high of the net. In the 21st-minute Kat Ludlow’s header off of Katie Daigle’s corner kick hit the crossbar and skipped high.

TCU’s best chance to score in the game came in the 35th-minute. Following a corner kick from Bobbi Clemmer, Madeline Hamm gathered in the ball and pulled a shot just wide-left of the goal from 16-yards out.

During the second half, Baylor kept up the offensive pressure as the Bears recorded 11 more shots. In the final minute of play, Alex Klein had BU’s best opportunity to score of the half as she fired in a shot from 10-yards out that was gobbled up by the goalkeeper Arnold.

Larsen and L. Campos led the Bears with five shots each, while B. Campos contributed four and Klein had three shots. As a team Baylor racked up 24 shots in the game.

Michelle Kloss was forced to make no saves, while playing the full 90 minutes in goal for Baylor. She is now 14-1-4 on the year.

With the regular season wrapped up Baylor will travel to San Antonio, Texas for the 17th-annual Big 12 Championship at Blossom Soccer Stadium. As the No. 2 seed, the Bears will face No. 7 seed Oklahoma State (11-5-3, 1-3-3) in quarterfinal round of play on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
