Baylor Softball Takes Two From Texas A&M CC

WACO (February 16, 2013) -- Baylor’s (9-2) pitching staff allowed just one run, while the offense added 16 hits in a two-game sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-8) Saturday afternoon at day two of the Miken Classic.

“The pitchers continue to go out there and be impressive,” head coach Glenn Moore said. “I thought we did a great job of taking care of business today. We put ourselves in position to win this tournament, but we need to keep the momentum going.”

Sarah Smith went 3-for-6 with a run and two RBI on the night, while Kathy Shelton added three hits and Kaitlyn Thumann collected three RBI.

Game One

Baylor The Lady Bears put in a workman-like effort in game one, defeating the Islanders 4-1 to finish pool play undefeated.

Heather Stearns (3-1) picked up the win, going 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.

Shelton and Robin Landrith each added a pair of hits in an eight-hit night for BU.

Baylor got things going early, putting the game in motion in the top of the first. Kaitlyn Thumann led off with a walk and stole second to reach scoring position. Shelton sent a base hit to shortstop, but the throw to first went wide, allowing Thumann to score from second for a 1-0 lead. With runners at first and second and one out, Baylor struck out in back-to-back at bats to end the threat.

The Lady Bears doubled their lead in the fourth on an RBI-single from Bailey Chalmers, scoring Landrith for the 2-0 lead.

BU added two more in the top of the fifth, as Shelton opened with a single to left, stole second and came around to score on a double from Holly Holl. Landrith delivered the fourth run of the game on an RBI-single to right, giving Stearns and the Lady Bears a 4-0 lead.

The Islanders got on the board with an RBI-double off relief pitcher, Liz Paul, in the sixth.

Game Two

Whitney Canion tossed a one-hit gem, retiring 17 of the last 18 batters she faced, while Thumann collected three RBI in a 7-0 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the semifinal game.

Thumann’s three RBI marked a career high, while Sarah Smith went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Baylor recorded three triples (Thumann, Linsey Hays) on the evening, the most since registering two vs. UT Arlington on March 21, 2010.

Canion (4-1) pitched her first complete-game shutout, going 7.0 innings, allowing one hit, striking out nine and walking two.

The Lady Bears busted the game open in the second with four runs and one big hit from Thumann. With one away, pinch runner Jill Reid scored on a wild pitch for the first run of the ballgame. That set the stage for Thumann, who hit a rocket toward center that rolled all the way to the wall for a bases-clearing triple and a 4-0 advantage.

Hays led off the fourth with a triple of her own, a shot toward left center. With one away, Smith singled off the third baseman, bring Hays across the plate for the five-run cushion.

After Thumann led off the sixth with a single, the sophomore advanced to second on to second and third on a pair of wild pitches. Sarah Crockett hit a slow roller to short, scoring Thumann, and reached safely with an errant throw. Smith came to the plate and delivered another RBI, this time to left, scoring Crockett for the 7-0 advantage.

Canion retired 16-straight before a two-out walk in the seventh broke the streak.

Baylor will face Pacific at 11 a.m. in the championship game of the Miken Classic, while Northern Colorado and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will square off in the consolation game at 9 a.m.
