Baylor Women’s Golf In Second After First Round At Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (February 4, 2013) -- The Baylor women’s golf team finished the first round of Miami’s Hurricane Invitational in second place after shooting 14-over-par 298 on Monday at the Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club.

Teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday, but play was suspended due to darkness with four holes left to play. The Lady Bears trail tournament leader Texas State (+8; 292) by six strokes and have a one-stroke lead on Mercer (+15, 299). Miami (+17; 301) and Oklahoma State (+17; 301) are tied for fourth place with 36 holes remaining.

Lauren Taylor (+1; 72) leads all Baylor players and is tied for sixth place individually. Hayley Davis is one stroke behind Taylor with a first round two-over-par 73, and she is tied with five other players in 12th place.

“If Lauren Taylor were to make a few more putts, I think she could have a really good round tomorrow,” head coach Jay Goble said. “She is striking it well, but she is just struggling on the greens.”

Emma Carberry (+5; 76) is tied for 27th place with six other players, while Annette Lyche (+6, 77) and Natalia Perez (+6; 77) are one stroke behind Carberry and tied for 34th place.

Laura Lonardi, who is competing in her first tournament as a Lady Bear, is tied for 18th place with a first round three-over-par 74.

“Laura played really well for her first college event,” Goble said. “She has been avoiding really big mistakes, and I think she is going to do fine. She is a competitor.”

Players are scheduled to resume the second round at 8 a.m. ET Tuesday, and the final round will begin immediately following the conclusion of round two.
