RHODES, Iowa (April 20, 2013) -- Baylor jumped to the top of the leaderboard by shooting 2-under-par 286 in Saturday’s second round at the Big 12 Championship at Harvester Golf Club, and freshman Lauren Taylor maintained the individual lead by firing a 4-under-par 68.
The Lady Bears (+29, 319-286=605) lead Iowa State (+30, 320-286=606) and Oklahoma State (+30, 317-289=306) by one stroke heading to Sunday’s championship round. Texas Tech (+36, 316-296=612) dropped from the top of the leaderboard to fourth place, and Oklahoma (+39, 322-293=615) is 10 strokes back of Baylor in fifth place.
Baylor’s second-round 286 tied for the second-best single round in Big 12 Championship history, one shot back of the record 285 shot by Iowa State in last year’s event.
Taylor (-2, 74-68=142), who entered the day with a one stroke lead after shooting 74 on Friday, stayed atop the leaderboard after shooting 4-under-par 68 in the second round. She’s three strokes ahead of Iowa State’s Punpaka Phuntumabamrung (+1, 77-68=145) and six strokes in front of the next closest player, Oklahoma State’s Julie Yang (+4, 76-72=148).
“Lauren played golf very simply today,” head coach Jay Goble said. “It was really cool to watch.”
Taylor’s round included four birdies and she was the only golfer in the 45-player field to play a bogey-free round. She was the only player to make four birdies in Friday’s opening round.
Sophomore Hayley Davis (+5, 80-69=149) moved into the top five with a second round 3-over-par 69. She is tied for fourth with Texas’ Bertine Strauss (+5, 80-69=149).
“Hayley got more aggressive and worked on her putting before today’s round,” Goble said. “It was more of a normal day for Hayley, so it’s good to see her back.”
Laura Lonardi (+12, 83-73=156) is tied for 23rd, Emma Carberry (+14, 82-76=158) is tied for 29th and Annette Lyche (+18, 84-78=162) is tied for 33rd place. Lonardi improved 10 strokes from her opening round.
“Laura shot 1-over today, but she played very solid golf,” Goble said. “That was great to see out of a freshman who hasn’t played in the lineup very much.”
Tee times for Sunday’s championship round begin at 8 a.m. CT, and Baylor will tee off in the third and final group with Iowa State and Oklahoma State. Lyche has BU’s first tee time at 9:40 a.m., followed by Carberry, Lonardi, Davis and Taylor, respectively, in 10-minute intervals. Live scoring is available through www.GolfStat.com.
