OXFORD, Miss. (April 5, 2013) -- The Baylor women’s golf team finished day one of the Rebel Intercollegiate tied for second place after shooting 1-over-par 289 in Friday’s opening round at the Ole Miss Golf Course.
“We have put ourselves in position to go into tomorrow and the next day and have a chance to win,” head coach Jay Goble said. “We need to stick with our process and keep doing exactly what we are doing now.”
The Lady Bears are tied with Mississippi State and trail tournament leader Coastal Carolina (-4; 284) by five strokes. East Tennessee State (+2; 290) stands alone in fourth place, while LSU (+3; 291) and Kentucky (+3; 291) are tied for fifth place.
Sophomore Hayley Davis leads all Baylor scorers and is tied for first place individually after shooting an opening round 5-under-par 67. Davis shares the top spot with East Tennessee State’s Chloe Garner and Tulane’s Madison Opfer. The trio tied the lowest round in tournament history.
“Hayley is kind of our superstar right now. She is playing really well,” Goble said. “I think the big thing for her is that she putted really well today. She hit the ball well, but this is a golf course where if you make a few putts, you can get a good score going.”
Laura Lonardi (E; 72) is tied for 11th place with five other players. Annette Lyche (+2; 74) shares 26th place, while Lauren Taylor (+4; 76) and Natalia Perez (+4; 76), who is competing as an individual, are tied for 43rd place and Emma Carberry (+5; 77) is tied for 53rd place.
Baylor’s Saturday tee times begin with Perez at 9:51 a.m. CT, followed by Carberry, Taylor, Lyche, Lonardi and Davis in 9-minute intervals starting at 11:30 a.m. Live scoring is available through www.GolfStat.com.
