IRVING (April 9, 2013) -- For the second time this season, Baylor women's tennis sophomore Ema Burgic has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The Lukavac, Bosnia & Herzegovina, native was undefeated during singles action in two doubleheaders this past weekend, including a win over 11th-ranked Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State. Burgic has now won 10 matches in a row and is a perfect 5-0 in conference play. In doubles, Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva went 3-1 this weekend, losing its first match in 12 outings against Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic.
For the season, the ninth-ranked Burgic has played all of her matches at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. She has an 18-5 dual match record in singles and is 19-6 overall against nationally ranked players. Alongside Kisialeva, she has a 13-2 mark in the No. 1 doubles spot for the Lady Bears.
The sophomore’s No. 9 ranking gives Baylor seven players in the last eight seasons, who have achieved a top-15 ranking. In the last eight seasons, Baylor head coach Joey Scrivano has nurtured a total of five players into a top-10 talent.
It is Baylor's 30th Big 12 honor in the 17-year history of the Big 12 Conference. Burgic won the award earlier this season on March 11, 2013.
Baylor (11-13) will be back in action on Saturday as the Lady Bears hit the road to face Oklahoma.
