WACO (April 17, 2012) -- Baylor freshman outfielder Michael Howard has been suspended indefinitely from the baseball program for a violation of team academic rules, head coach Steve Smith announced prior to Tuesday’s game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

“While I regret that this action was necessary, I am optimistic that Michael will respond appropriately,” Smith said.

Howard was named Big 12 co-Newcomer of the Week on Monday. He had 10 hits in 15 at-bats last week, including a game-winning home run in the 11th inning of Sunday’s series finale at Kansas State.

The Prescott, Ariz., native is hitting .325 with 14 walks, 18 runs scored and 12 RBI in 35 games played this season. He has made 19 starts as a corner outfielder and designated hitter for the Bears.

Following a pair of midweek games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the sixth-ranked Bears take on No. 2 Texas A&M in the final Big 12 edition of the Battle of the Brazos. Friday’s game is at 6:35 p.m. in College Station, and then the series shifts to Baylor Ballpark for a 6:35 p.m. game on Saturday and a 2:05 p.m. series finale on Sunday.

There will be no further comment on Howard’s indefinite suspension.
