RHODES, Iowa (April 19, 2013) -- Freshman Lauren Taylor holds the individual lead, and the Baylor women’s golf team is in third place after Friday’s opening round of the 2013 Big 12 Championship. The Lady Bears shot 31-over-par 319 in difficult conditions during the first round at the Harvester Golf Club.
“It was not ideal golfing and scoring conditions on the course,” head coach Jay Goble said. “We can’t focus on what anybody else does. If we focus on our game and stay in our process we are going to be fine.”
The Lady Bears are just three strokes behind tournament leader Texas Tech (+28, 316) and two strokes behind second place Oklahoma State (+29, 317). Baylor leads fourth place Iowa State (+32, 320) by one stroke and top-seeded Oklahoma (+34, 322) by two strokes. Kansas (+34; 322) is also tied for fifth place.
Taylor, a freshman from Rugby, England, leads the tournament after shooting 2-over-par 74. She’s one stroke ahead of Kansas State’s Kimberly Kaufman (+3, 75) and two shots in front of Kansas’ Yupaporn Kawinpakorn (+4, 76) and Oklahoma State’s Julie Yang (+4, 76).
“I think the conditions helped Lauren stay patient,” Goble said. “She knew it was tough and she knew everyone was going to struggle. She hit a bunch of good shots and made some putts on the front nine. She played a really solid round of golf and I was proud of her.”
Taylor was the only golfer in the 45-player field to make four birdies in the round, and she had four of the five birdies by Baylor players.
Sophomore Hayley Davis (+8, 80) is tied with five other players in ninth place, while Emma Carberry (+10, 82) is tied for 24th, Laura Lonardi (+11, 83) is tied for 29th and Annette Lyche (+12, 84) is tied for 32nd place.
Saturday tee times begin at 10 a.m. CT, and Baylor will tee off in the third and final group with Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Lyche has BU’s first tee time at 11:40 a.m., followed by Lonardi, Carberry, Davis and Taylor, respectively, in 10-minute intervals. Live scoring is available through www.GolfStat.com.
