Baylor’s Ludy & Turley Named ABCA All-Americans

WACO (June 20, 2012) -- Baylor’s Josh Ludy and Josh Turley were named All-Americans by the American Baseball Coaches Association on Wednesday, and they were joined by Logan Vick and Trent Blank to give the Bears four All-Midwest Region honorees.

Ludy was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-American second team, while Turley picked up third-team honors, making Baylor the only Big 12 Conference team with multiple ABCA All-Americans. Ludy, Turley and Vick were named first-team All-Midwest Region, and Blank picked up second-team All-Region accolades. Baylor was the only team with four All-Midwest Region selections.

All four players were previously named All-Americans by at least one other publication. Ludy was named to the NCBWA second team and the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper third team, Turley picked up second-team honors from Collegiate Baseball, Blank and Vick were both third-team honorees by Collegiate Baseball, and Blank added third-team recognition from the NCBWA.

Turley and Ludy are the 10th and 11th players in program history to earn ABCA All-America honors, and they join Kip Wells and Charley Carter (1998) as the only duos to earn All-America recognition from the ABCA in the same season. If Ludy is selected when Baseball America releases its All-America teams, he’ll join Jason Jennings and Kelly Shoppach as the only unanimous All-Americans in program history.

Ludy earned Big 12 Player of the Year honors on his way to hitting .362 with 16 home runs and 71 RBI. Ludy led the league in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage (.634), ranked third in batting average and hits (84), fourth in on-base percentage (.455) and ninth in doubles (15). He had five more home runs and 15 more RBI than any other player in the conference.

Ludy’s 16 home runs were the 10th most in a season in program history, and his 71 RBI ranked fourth all-time at Baylor and were the most since 2003. He was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round of the 2012 MLB Draft and has signed a professional contract with the organization.

Turley finished the 2012 season with a 9-1 record and a 1.96 ERA in 110.0 innings over 17 starts. His 1.96 ERA was the fifth-lowest by a Baylor pitcher during the aluminum-bat era, and his 9-1 record gave him the best winning percentage by a junior in program history.

Turley went 6-0 with a Big 12-leading 1.92 ERA in conference games this season, posting the lowest ERA in a Big 12 season by any pitcher in Baylor history. He was drafted in the 16th round by the Detroit Tigers and will have until July 13 to decide whether to sign a professional contract or return to Baylor for his senior season.

Vick, a Collegiate Baseball third-team All-American, hit .345 with a Big 12-best 25 doubles, four home runs, 43 walks, 43 RBI and 50 runs scored. His 25 doubles were one shy of the program record set by Michael Griffin in 2003, and he led the team with 19 stolen bases. Vick was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 11th round of the MLB Draft and join Turley in deciding by July 13 whether to sign a professional contract or return to Baylor for his senior season.

Blank, who also earned third-team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, went 11-1 with a 2.23 ERA in 105.0 innings over 19 appearances in his senior season. His 11 wins were the most by a Baylor pitcher since 2000 and the most by any pitcher in program history with fewer than two losses, and his 2.23 ERA was the ninth-lowest by any Bear during the aluminum-bat era. Blank was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 30th round of the MLB Draft and has already signed his professional contract.

Blank, Ludy, Turley and Vick form the second quartet of Baylor players to earn ABCA All-Region honors in one season. Jaime Bubela, Zane Carlson, Kyle Evans and Chad Hawkins were all honored in 2000, and the Bears had three All-Region selections in six other seasons.
