Bromell Earns Big 12 Athlete Of The Week Again

(April 2, 2014) The honors kept rolling in for Baylor track and field freshman Trayvon Bromell on Wednesday as he was named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week for a second straight week, the conference office announced.

The product of St. Petersburg, Fla., has already been honored as the USTFCCCA Male Athlete of the Week on Monday and garnered the Most Outstanding Athlete award at the Texas Relays on Saturday.

All the accolades stem from Bromell’s performance over the weekend at the 87th-annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin. He clocked a world-leading time of 10.01 to win the 100-meter dash on Saturday. That mark equaled the World Junior record for the event, while breaking the Baylor school record and the Texas Relays record.

Bromell was honored by the Big 12 Conference last week as well, after winning the TCU Invitational 200-meter title in a time of 20.23 on March 21 in his collegiate outdoor debut. That mark was sixth-fastest in BU history with all five faster times belonging to former 200-meter world record holder Michael Johnson.

The first-year Bear is the first BU athlete to win two Big 12 Athlete of the Week awards in the same outdoor season and he is only the second Big 12 male athlete to win the honor in back-to-back weeks, joining Kansas’ Mason Finley, who accomplished the feat in 2010.

Bromell joins Tiffani McReynolds, Jeremy Wariner, Skylar White and Darold Williamson as the only BU athletes to be recognized with two outdoor athlete awards in their career.

In his first collegiate 100-meter race on Friday, Bromell shattered the BU and Texas Relays records with a time of 10.02 in the prelims. He bettered the previous school record of Everett Walker (10.12), which was set in 2012 and also bested the previous Texas Relays record established by Gerald Phiri (10.06) of Texas A&M in 2011.

With his win in the final, Bromell entered into a four-way tie atop the World Junior record book with Darrel Brown (Trinidad, 2003), Jeff Demps (USA, 2008) and Yoshihide Kiryu (Japan, 2013).

The 100-meter win was not Bromell’s only accomplishment on the weekend. He also ran the leadoff leg for Baylor’s 4x100-meter relay team. Along with Blake Heriot, Walker and Alex Reece, Bromell helped take third in the event with a time of 39.09, the second-fastest time in school history.

Bromell now owns both the NCAA’s fastest 100 and 200-meter times.
Baylor has now had six male athletes honored nine times over 11 years of the outdoor award's existence.
