Buckholts Building Program After 20 Year Absence

BUCKHOLTS (March 29, 2013) -- In Buckholts, winning is not a priority.

After all, the Badgers haven't won a game in 20 years, but to be fair, baseball hasn't been around for a while.

"They're assuming it was early 90s, but no one really knows. No one's around who played back then," coach Chad Satcher said.

With that kind of gap, there's bound to be some growing pains.

"I would say anywhere from 5-8 had never even touched a baseball before," coach said.

"I've only played like half a year, pretty much. Which was a long time ago," Daniel Campos said.

But, putting a team together for the first time in two decades, the Badgers will take what they can get.

And what they got was overwhelming.

"There are 49 kids in the high school, 21 playing baseball," coach said.

"I was pretty surprised that half the school came out," Daniel Campos said.

And when half the school is playing, you're bound to be one of the only teams in Texas with girls on the roster. Really good girls.

"They're not just there to keep the numbers up. We've got one that starts for us," coach said she's an asset. She's not a liability by any stretch of the imagination.

Even Campos knows how good these girls are.

"Better than me," he said. "They're pretty good, so I have to say it," Campos said.

"It feels pretty cool, especially when I get them out and they hate it," said Shelby Pollard.

Between the girls and the rookies, more than half the team is playing baseball for the very first time.

Which is why no one expected Buckholts to win a game this season. But they did, in just their sixth game.

"It was amazing. We were surprised because it had been so long," Pollard said.

"It gives me goosebumps. How many people get to say that's the first win in 20 years," coach said.

Half of Buckholts high school can say it now. And the Badgers hope this is just the beginning.

"We've preached, 'let's not be a one-year and out, let's start a legacy here,' and that's what they want to pass on. They want to pass on a real program," coach said.
