BELTON (March 25, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to defending NCAA DIII national champions Pacific Lutheran University 6-1, 1-0 Monday afternoon in Belton. The wins improve the lutes to 13-11 on the season, while UMHB drops to 11-9.
Pacific Lutheran used an offensive surge in the top of the thks3ird inning to gain a 4-0 lead on the Cru, including an RBI single from Katie Lowery and a three-RBI home run from Kelsey Robinson. The Cru responded in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Victoria Gomez before Pacific Lutheran added two more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win. The Cru recorded three hits and no errors in the game while the Lutes recorded eight hits and four errors. Gomez, Halle Sabo and Janie Neyland all recorded hits for UMHB. Rebekah Ragsdale took the loss, pitching five innings with four strikeouts and four earned runs.
Neither team was able to an offensive going in the second game, as the contest remained scoreless until the top of the seventh when Pacific Lutheran’s Montessa Califano hit an RBI double with two outs to secure a 1-0 win. Halle Sabo recorded the lone hit for the Cru and earned the loss on the mound, allowing six. The Cru recorded one hit and no errors while the Lutes had eight hits and four errors.
The Cru will return to action this weekend with doubleheaders against Sul Ross State University on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29. Action will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday at Dee Dillon Field.
