DeWeese Named National Coach Of The Year

Belton (March 28, 2013) -- University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball coach Ken DeWeese and forward Kitrick Bell both earned honors from with the announcement of the website’s All-America Teams and national honors Thursday. The teams were released on the Internet site’s Hoopsville program.

DeWeese was named National Coach of the Year after leading UMHB to the Division III National Championship Game to become the first men’s basketball team from the state of Texas to advance that far. The Cru is currently 27-5, setting a new school single-season record for wins. UMHB is in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and is the only Texas or ASC men’s team to have advanced to the Division III Final Four. DeWeese also earned Schelde North America/DIII News National Coach of the Year honors earlier this week and was named ASC West Division Coach of the Year, as well.

Bell, a junior forward from Fort Bend Marshall High School, was named Honorable Mention All-American. He leads UMHB and the American Southwest Conference in rebounding with an average of 10.1 boards per game. Bell is also the team’s third leading scorer at 12.3 points per contest. He is shooting 57 percent from the field and leads the Cru with 11 blocked shots. Bell also has 25 assists, 21 steals and 11 double-doubles on the season. He was also a Second Team All-South Region selection and earned ASC All-Conference and First Team ASC All-West Division honors. Bell is UMHB’s first All-American since Robert Moore took Third Team honors following the 2001 season.

“This is an absolute extreme honor. I am humbled and honored,” DeWeese said following the announcement. “And I just can’t put into words how proud I am of Kitrick and the teammates that helped him get there.”

UMHB will now face Amherst (Mass.) College for the Division III National Championship. That game will be played Sunday, April 7th, at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The title game tips off at 11:30 AM Central Time (12:30 PM Eastern) and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
