Football Recruit From Texas Dies During Pickup Basketball Game

BOZEMAN, Mont. (February 28, 2013)—Floabi Akanbi, 17, a Montana State football recruit and senior at Glenda Dawson High School in Pearland, died after he collapsed Wednesday during a pickup basketball game.

Akanbi was pronounced dead at a hospital Wednesday afternoon.

MSU football coach Rob Ash said Akanbi was a wonderful young man who captivated everyone he met and had an incredibly bright future.

He said he didn’t have the words to properly express the team's sorrow.

Akanbi signed with MSU on Feb. 6.

Ash said at the time he was more impressed with Akanbi's academic skills.

Akanbi had planned to major in chemical engineering.

Dawson High football coach Wade Oliphant told KHOU-TV that Akanbi was a great kid who always did the right thing.
