HOUSTON (June 26, 2012)--Harris County commissioners took no action Tuesday on the future of the Astrodome after the chairman of the Sports and Convention Corporation laid out several recommendations.

The long-debated future of the vacant and deteriorating facility led off a capital projects meeting Tuesday.

Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said commissioners will continue to discuss what to do with the revered dome once dubbed the "Eighth Wonder of the World."

Last month, consultants recommended turning the stadium into a multipurpose facility at a cost of about $270 million.

The consultants also pushed for a 10,000-seat arena to replace the small and seldom-used Reliant Arena, across a parking lot from the dome, which would cost about $385 million.

Any costly plan would likely require a voter-approved tax increase.

The Astrodome was the scene of the start of the indoor sports era when the Houston Astros hosted the Yankees on April 9, 1965 in the air-conditioned facility.
