WACO (March 28, 2012) -- Baylor’s Brittney Griner and teammate Odyssey Sims were both named All-Americans by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Wednesday and Griner was named to the five-member Wooden Award All-America team. In addition, both players were named Associated Press All-Americans on Tuesday.
Joining Griner on the Wooden Award All-America Team are: Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Elena Delle Donne (Delaware), Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford) and Julie Wojta (Wisconsin-Green Bay). This year's team will be honored during the 36th annual Wooden Award Gala on April 6 in Los Angeles, while the recipient of the 2012 John R. Wooden Award, of which Griner and Sims are both finalists, will be announced on ESPN at the NCAA Men's Final Four in New Orleans.
Joining Griner and Sims on the 10-member USBWA All-America Team are: Diggins, Delle Donne, Ogwumike, Chelsea Gray (Duke), Shenise Johnson (Miami.), A'dia Mathies (Kentucky), Samantha Prahalis (Ohio State), and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland). All 10 players also are the finalists for the USBWA National Player of the Year, which will be announced on April 3.
Griner, a 6-8 post, has led Baylor to the its second Final Four in three seasons and a perfect 38-0 mark. She is averaging 23.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.2 blocks per game while shooting 61.1 percent from the floor and 80.4 percent from the free throw line. In addition, Griner threw down two dunks in this season’s NCAA Championship and now has seven to her credit. Griner was named most outstanding player of the Des Moines Regional and the Big 12 Championship, Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and is a finalist for every major postseason award.
Griner, a two-time USBWA All-American and the organization’s 2010 Freshman of the Year and a two-time Wooden All-American, has scored 2,328 career points and blocked 592 shots; she needs 72 more blocks to become the NCAA career leader.
Sims, last year’s USBWA Freshman of the Year, excels on both ends of the floor as well. The 5-8 sophomore guard averages 14.8 points per game, including 20.8 vs. ranked opponents, 4.4 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.8 rebounds per contest. She is a two-time All-Big 12 first-team selection and was named to the Des Moines Region and Big 12 Championship All-Tournament teams.
