The McLennan Highlanders moved to 3-0 in conference play with a 91-84 overtime victory over the Ranger Rangers Saturday afternoon in Ranger.
The game was tight through the first half. MCC built a five-point lead with 16 minutes to go in the half. Ranger fought back, tying the game at 19 less than three minutes later. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way, with Ranger holding the 40-39 lead at the break.
The second half started in the same fashion, with MCC holding the 60-58 lead with 12:15 to play in the game. Ranger pulled away with a 7-0 run in the next two minutes. The Rangers extended the lead to nine with 4:18 on the clock but the Highlanders weren't done. MCC stepped up on both ends of the court, using a 9-0 run to tie the game with 1:29 left in regulation. The Highlanders had two chances to secure the win. Clarence Willard's free throw was off the mark and Deondre Ray's long jumper at the buzzer bounced off the iron to force overtime.
MCC continued its hot streak into overtime. D.J. Weathers' back-to-back 3-pointers gave the Highlanders an eight-point lead with 1:36 to play in the extra period and Ranger was unable to recover.
Weathers led the Highlanders with 25 points, including nine points in the overtime period. Prudhomme added 17 and Ray scored 12. Tevin Hanner and Willard scored 11 and 10, respectively, to round out MCC players in double figures.
In women's action, it was all MCC as the Highlassies defeated the Lady Rangers 94-38.
MCC opened the game on a 22-0 run and held the 40-13 lead at halftime.
The second half was much the same as the Highlassies cruised to the easy victory.
Dominique Taylor led the Highlassies with 21 points and Cha'Zaye Wright added 17 points. Ashlyn Ward and Latifah Rainey added 14 and 11, respectively.
MCC returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Collin. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
