Highlanders, Highlassies Defeat Collin

PLANO (February 16, 2013) -- The McLennan Highlassies defeated the conference-leading Collin Cougars 70-66 Saturday afternoon in Plano.

MCC built an early six-point lead. Collin tied the game at 10 with 12:44 to play in the first half. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way and were tied at 29 at the break.

Collin pulled away midway through the second half, taking the 54-46 lead with 8:06 remaining in the game. The Highlassies fought back and took a one-point with 4:30 to go. The game was tied at 63 with 1:49 to play. MCC ended the game on a 7-3 run, including 5-6 from the free throw line to seal the win.

Shanice Davis led the Highlassies with 22 points and Cha'Zaye Wright added 12.

In men's action, the Highlanders defeated Collin 71-68.

The game was tight through the first half with neither team gaining more than a four-point lead. MCC led 35-31 at halftime.

The Highlanders opened the second half on a 9-1 run to take the 44-32 lead,the largest of the contest with 17:41 remaining in the game. The Cougars steadily chipped away at the MCC lead, cutting it to one, 62-61, with 1:12 on the clock. The Highlanders ended the game going 9-10 from the free throw line and holding Collin to seven points to secure the win.

Clarence Willard and Shawn Prudhomme led the Highlanders with 15 points each. D.J. Weathers and Shawn Prudhomme scored 13 and 12, respectively. Wayne Langston added 10.

MCC will return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Hill. The women's game will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
