Highlanders, Highlassies Pick up Wins

WACO (November 3, 2012) -- In a game that came down to the wire, the McLennan Highlassies defeated the Angelina Lady Roadrunners 72-71 tonight at The Highlands.

Angelina opened the game on a 5-0 run and extended the lead to 10 with 6:10 to play in the first half. MCC fought back, tying the game with just over a minute to go before halftime. The Lady Roadrunners hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds to take the 37-35 lead into the locker room.

Angelina extended the lead to eight early in the second half. MCC rallied to take the 56-55 lead, it's first of the game, with 9:10 to go. The teams traded leads down the stretch. The Lady Roadrunners led 71-69 with just over a minute to play. Rae'Vaughn Barnes drained a three-pointer to give MCC the one-point lead and the Highlassie defense sealed the win.

Sophomore Dominique Taylor led the Highlassies with 16 points. Cha'Zaye Wright and Sondra Flippin added 12 and 11, respectively.

In men's action, the McLennan Highlanders defeated the Blinn Buccaneers 72-65.

The game was tit-for-tat through the midway point of the first half. Blinn held the 16-14 lead when MCC used an 8-0 run to take the 22-16 lead with just under six minutes to play in the half. The Highlanders extended the lead to eight but the Buccaneers cut the lead to two at the break, 31-29.

The teams traded the lead until the eight minute mark in the second half. MCC led 48-47 when they began to pull away. The Highlanders took their first double-digit lead at 66-55 with 2:27 to go. Blinn cut the lead to six with 16 seconds on the clock but was unable to pull any closer.

Freshman Devonse Reed led the Highlanders with 19 points. Kevin E Wagner scored 17 points and D.J. Weathers added 13.
