WACO (March 16, 2013) --The McLennan Highlanders and Grayson Vikings split Saturday's conference doubleheader at Bosque River Ballpark.
MCC took game one 4-2 with Caleb Wallingford getting the win on the mound.
Grayson began the scoring with two runs in the top of the first as Wes Jones drew a walk and scored on a home run by Cody Gunter.
The Highlanders tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second. Garrett Wallace singled and Cole Calder doubled. Wallace scored on a ground out by Tyler Floyd, and Calder scored on a ground out by Lee Raley.
MCC sealed the win with two runs in the fifth. Zach Valenzuela singled and Evan Williams was safe at first on a Grayson error. Kyle Thornell followed with a double to score Valenzuela. Williams then scored on a fly out by Justin Perales.
Grayson defeated MCC 11-10 in the nightcap with Enrique Oquendo taking the loss on the mound.
The Vikings exploded for seven runs in the first inning. Trey Rodriguez drew a lead off walk. Jones singled and Gunter walked to load the bases. Chris Gittens was safe at first and advanced to second a Highlander error that brought Rodriguez and Jones into score. Gunter then scored on a fly out by Kevin Cornelius. Zack Reding followed with a two-run home run. Robert Rosser walked and James Gillean singled. Rosser then scored on a fly out by Ty Hanson. Rodriguez followed with a single to score Gillean.
The Highlanders got on the board with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Valenzuela doubled and scored on a single by Thornell. Perales followed with a single. Calder then singled to score Thornell. Reid Coover drew a walk to load the bases. Floyd then singled to score Perales. Matt Hilston was hit by the pitch, bringing Calder in to score. Coover then scored on a single by Valenzuela.
MCC tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Williams led off with a triple and scored on a single by Thornell. Perales and Calder singled to load the bases. Thornell then scored on a ground out by Coover.
Grayson took the lead with two runs in the seventh. Gunter and Cornelius were both safe on Highlander errors. Reding then singled to score Gunter. Shaka Sterling followed with a fielder's choice that put Reding out at second. Gillean then doubled to score Cornelius.
The Highlanders tied the game again with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Thornell led off with a solo home run. Calder singled, stole second and advanced to third on a ground out by Coover. Floyd then singled to score Calder.
The Vikings regained the lead with two runs in the top of the eighth. Gunter waked and Gittens doubled. Gunter then scored on a fly out by Cornelius. Reding followed with a double to score Gittens.
MCC rounded out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the eighth. Hilston and Valenzuela drew back-to-back walks. Williams followed with a ground out, advancing the runners. Hilston then scored on a ground out by Thornell.
The Highlanders return to action on Tuesday, hosting Blinn for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
The McLennan Highlassies dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader with the Weatherford Lady Coyotes in Weatherford.
Weatherford defeated MCC 6-1 in the first game with Laura Wilson taking the loss in the circle. Courtney Mica and Taylor Davis were both 2-4 at the plate. Davis recorded a double and Lena Capps hit a triple. Abby White picked up an RBI.
The Lady Coyotes defeated the Highlassies 4-1 in the nightcap with Veronica Garcia taking the loss. Davis was 2-2 with a triple and Kady Crow recorded an RBI.
MCC returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Cisco for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
