(January 15, 2014) The McLennan Highlassies and Highlanders both moved to 2-0 in conference play with wins Wednesday night in Ranger.
The Highlassies defeated the Lady Rangers 82-65 in the early game.
The teams were evenly matched through the first three minutes of play. Ranger held the 8-7 lead with 16:25 to play in the first half. McLennan began to pull away, taking its first double-digit lead at 22-12 with 13:16 on the clock. The Highlassies increased the lead to 18 with a minute to go before the half and held the 46-29 advantage at the break.
McLennan cruised in the second half to the easy victory.
Sophomore Shanice Davis led the Highlassies with 16 points and freshman Kendra Wynn added12.
In men's action, the Highlanders defeated the Rangers 73-51.
Both teams started off sluggish, struggling with turnovers early on. Ranger led 8-7 midway through the first half. McLennan broke the game open with a 12-0 run, taking the 19-8 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. The Highlanders led 29-16 at halftime.
The Rangers cut the lead to eight with just under 15 minutes to play in the game. But the Highlanders pulled away again, leading by as many as 25 down the stretch.
Sophomore Wayne Langston led McLennan with 11 points. D.J. Weathers and Julius Foster added 10 points each.
The Highlassies return to action on Saturday, hosting Cisco at 2 p.m. The Highlanders return to action one week from tonight, traveling to Hill for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
