(March 14, 2013) -- The McLennan Highlassies swept the Vernon Lady Chaparrals Thursday at Bosque River Ballpark.
MCC took game one 4-3 with Veronica Garcia picking up the win in the circle.
The Highlassies began the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the second. Lena Capps singled and Abby White drew a walk. Sevanah Campos-Reyes was safe at first on an error, bringing Capps in to score. Audrey Calvo bunted to load the bases. Tiffany Birdwell then drew a walk to score White.
Vernon tied the game with two runs in the fifth. Danielle Guerra led off with a single and scored on a double by Shelby Melvin. Haley Neill then singled to score Melvin.
MCC took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth as Courtney Mica doubled, advanced to third on a single by Taylor Davis and scored on a fly out by Kady Crow.
The Lady Chaparrals tied the game with one run in the sixth. Kelsey Hise was hit by the pitch. Baylor Sugg followed with a fielder's choice, putting Hise out at second. Sugg advanced to third on a single by Taylor Beeman and stole home.
The Highlassies sealed the win with a run in the bottom of the sixth. White drew a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Brooke Jones. Jones advanced to second on a passed ball and came around to score on a Vernon error.
MCC defeated Vernon 2-1 in the nightcap with Garcia getting the win.
Vernon's only run came in the third inning as Melvin singled, advanced around to third on ground outs by Guerra and Samantha Hartsfield, and scored on an MCC error.
The Highlassies scored two runs in the fifth to secure the win. Campos-Reyes drew a lead off walk. Calvo and Mica both bunted to load the bases. Campos-Reyes and Calvo both scored on a fly out by Davis.
MCC continues conference play on Saturday, traveling to Weatherford for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
