(March 7, 2012) -- The McLennan Highlanders and Vernon Chaparrals split today's conference doubleheader today in Vernon.
MCC took game one 12-1.
The Highlanders began the scoring with four runs in the top of the first. Dalton Vannatta and Quinten Davis drew back-to-back walks to start the game. Ty Marlow and Jonathan Mejia both hit into fielder's choices, putting Vannatta and Davis out. Reid Coover walked to load the bases and Matt Hilston walked, bringing Marlow in to score. Caleb Williams then doubled to clear the bases.
MCC added two runs in the second. Vannatta walked but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Davis. Marlow followed with a home run to put MCC ahead 6-0.
Vernon's only run came in the bottom of the fourth as Keaton Green singled, advance to second on a Highlander error, moved to third on single by Blake Scannel and scored in a pop fly by Aberdeen Chan.
The Highlanders exploded for six runs in the seventh. Marlow and Mejia started the inning with back-to-back home runs. Coover drew a walk and scored on a double by Hilston. Williams walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Max Farmer followed with a single to score Hilston. Brett Thornell then singled and Davis singled to score Farmer.
Th Chaparrals needed an extra inning to defeat the Highlanders 11-10 in the nightcap.
Vernon began the scoring with one run in the bottom of the third as Taylaun Scott reached first and advanced to second on a MCC error, then scored on a single by Kevan House.
MCC took the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Marlow led off with a single. Derek Barosh and Dalton Rodriguez both walked to load the bases. Farmer then hit a pop fly to right field that was dropped by the Vernon fielder allowing Marlow, Barosh and Rodriguez all to score.
The Highlanders added one run in the sixth as Hilston was hit by the pitch, stole second, moved to third on a double by Rodriguez and scored on a balk.
The Chaparrals scored one run in the bottom of the sixth as Scott walked, moved to third on a double by House and scored on a Highlander error.
MCC scored two runs in the seventh. Davis singled and scored on a double by Barosh. Barosh then scored on a single by Hilston.
The Highlanders extended the lead to 8-2 with two runs in the eighth. Brett Thornell led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Vannatta. Thornell scored on a double by Davis. Davis moved to third on a ground out by Marlow and scored on a single by Coover.
Vernon tied the game with six runs in the bottom of the eighth. Jamie Gurrola and Scannel both singled. Mike Sordia then singled to score Gurrola and Ketih Yorkman singled to score Scannel. Seth Garcia followed with a double, scoring Sordia and Yorkman. House then homered to clear the bases.
MCC scored one run in the top of the ninth as Farmer reached first safely and moved to second on a Vernon error, moved to third on a ground out by Thornell, and scored on a double by Davis.
The Chaparrals tied the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth. Josh Sloan drew a walk and was replaced at first by pinch runner Damien Aguilar. Aguilar moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on a ground out by Gurrola. Aguilar then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Scannel.
The Highlanders scored one run in the top of the 10th inning. Coover singled, Hilston doubled and Rodriguez walked to load the bases. Coover then scored on a sacrifice fly by Farmer.
Vernon stole the win with two runs in the bottom of the 10th. Yorkman singled and scored on a double by Garcia. Scott then singled, moving Garcia to third. House was given an intentional walk to load the bases and Garcia scored on a passed ball.
The two team will complete the four-game series with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday at Bosque River Ballpark.
