Jones Joins UMHB Women's Basketball As Grad Assistant Coach

BELTON (November 2, 2112) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball program has added former Baylor University standout Melissa Jones as a graduate assistant coach for the 2012-13 season. Jones has been assisting the Cru athletic department in game management this school year before joining the basketball staff. She is working on her Master’s Degree in Sports Administration at UMHB.

Jones was a four-year letter winner for the Baylor University women’s basketball team and played for an Elite Eight team and Big 12 Conference Champion as a senior. She was also an Associated Press All-American and All-Big 12 selection her senior season. Jones was a two-time team captain, six-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection and earned Big 12 Co-Sixth Man honors as a sophomore. Jones also had her jersey retired by the Baylor women’s basketball program following her career. She was named Big 12 Female Sportsperson of the Year following the 2010-11 school year. The Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year Awards recognize student-athletes who display an extraordinary degree of sportsmanship and/or community service during the academic year. The Baylor women’s basketball team also now presents the Melissa Jones Hustle and Courage Award annually to the player who best embodies those qualities. Jones graduated from Baylor University in May of 2011 with a degree in communications.

“I am very excited to be a part of the UMHB women’s basketball coaching staff,” Jones said. “I am excited to work with Coach Taylor and learn from her and hopefully use what I learned as a player from Kim Mulkey to help this program be successful.”

Jones also was active in the community during her time at Baylor and made three mission trips to Kenya as part of the school’s sports ministry program. She was an active leader in Baylor's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter and also worked in soup kitchens, volunteered with the Salvation Army and visited area hospitals and elementary schools.

“We think Melissa will be a tremendous asset to our women’s basketball program with her experience on and off the court,” UMHB Vice-President for Athletics Randy Mann said. “I am excited to have her join the staff and look forward to the positive impact she will have on the team.”

The UMHB women’s basketball team is under the direction of first-year head coach Lisa Curliss-Taylor. The Cru will tip-off the 2012-13 season with two games at the Southwestern University Tip-Off Classic in Georgetown on November 16th and 17th.
