Belton (February 4, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor has named Darla Kirby interim head women’s golf coach for the spring 2013 season. Kirby takes over the reins from Nancy Taylor-Capps who resigned to become Associate Head Women’s Golf Coach at Queens University.
Kirby served as head coach of the Cru women’s golf team for the first 16 years of the program’s existence before moving to a full-time administrator’s role as Associate Athletic Director in the summer of 2012.
Kirby started the UMHB women’s golf program in 1996 and won the school’s only national championship when the Cru claimed the 2000 NAIA National title with a nine-stroke victory over the University of British Columbia. Under her leadership, UMHB women’s golf has won nine American Southwest Conference Championships and made 12 National Tournament appearances. Kirby won NAIA Women’s Golf National Coach of the Year honors in 2000, NGCA Regional Coach of the Year five times and has earned ASC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year recognition nine times in her coaching career. Kirby has coached 17 All-Americans and 50 All-Conference selections in her tenure at UMHB. She also helped coach Holly Glover to NGCA Division III National Player of the Year honors in the spring of 2005. Kirby will also continue with her duties as Associate Athletic Director and Compliance Coordinator for UMHB Athletics.
“I feel like Darla is the right choice for the job at this time,” UMHB Vice-President for Athletics Randy Mann said. “She knows the players well and is very capable of leading this team on its quest for a National Championship.”
The UMHB women’s golf team closed out the fall schedule with a 39-stroke victory at the Alamo City Classic in San Antonio and the Cru is also the two-time defending ASC Champions. UMHB also posted a pair of second-place team finishes in the fall and set new school scoring records for 18, 36 and 54 holes in tournaments this fall. The Cru women were ranked #1 in the country in the final Golfstat Division III head-to-head rankings of the fall season and were fourth in the nation in the final Golf World/WGCA Division Top 25 Poll of the fall.
The UMHB women will open the 2013 schedule with the UMHB Spring Classic at Stone Tree Golf Course in Killeen on February 25th and 26th.
