Lady Bears Blow Past Tarleton State In Final Exhibition

WACO (November 5, 2012) -- Playing in its final exhibition of the season, the Baylor women’s basketball team overcame some early mistakes and cruised to a 92-49 win over Tarleton State, Monday night, at the Ferrell Center in front of 7,622 fans.

With Baylor holding a slim 10-9 advantage six minutes into the contest, the Lady Bears outscored Tarleton State 44-13 the remainder of the half to pull away from the TexAnns.

Baylor’s Brittney Griner, the 2011-12 unanimous National Player of the Year, did not participate in BU’s final warm up game, per coach’s decision.

Four of the five Baylor starters scored in double-figures, led by senior post Brooklyn Pope. Pope shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field for a game-high 16 points. Kimetria Hayden (15), Odyssey Sims (11) and Jordan Madden (10) all tallied double-digit points for the Lady Bears. Sims added a game-high six assists and seven steals in BU’s win.

The Lady Bears shot 58.7 percent from the field (37-63) and outrebounded Tarleton State 37-25, as well as recording 24 steals.

Baylor forced 35 Tarleton State turnovers, tallying 49 points off TexAnn miscues. The Lady Bears outscored Tarleton 66-30 in the paint and tallied 34 bench points.

Kiara Wright, sister of former Baylor All-American receiver Kendall Wright, led Tarleton State with 18 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out with less than two minutes to play.

Baylor will host Lamar in a Friday afternoon matchup to open the 2012-13 season. Tip is slated for noon and will be televised on FOX Sports Southwest.
