FLUSHING, N.Y. (November 8, 2012) -- Baylor men’s tennis freshman Julian Lenz won in straight sets to advance to the round of 16 in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
"I think he did a really great job following and executing the game plan we put together before the match and he was focused the entire time. His intensity level was high,” assistant coach Dominik Mueller said. "Matches like these where there is high intensity make you a better tennis player. He executed from the beginning of the match all the way until the end. It was just a really clean performance.”
In the first round, Lenz faced the 101st-ranked Florent Diep of Florida and pulled off a victory in two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Lenz will next face Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine in the round of 16 on Friday. The preseason ITA third-ranked Fanselow comes off of his first-round victory against the eighth-seeded Ku Singh of Georgia 7-6(6), 6-4. Fanselow received a Wildcard bid into the indoor tournament and is 3-1 on the year, 1-1 versus ranked opponents.
“I think Julian needs to do the same thing that he did today,” Mueller said. “He just has to keep his intensity and focus up the entire time. It’s been a challenge for him this semester to do so, but if he can keep it up, then he will give himself a chance to earn another win."
