Rangers RHP Colby Lewis Out For Season

Arlington (July 23, 2012) -- Rangers pitcher Colby Lewis will miss the rest of the season because of a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow that will require surgery.

Lewis was evaluated by team physician Dr. Keith Meister before Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Meister will perform the operation later this week.

Before the game, Texas manager Ron Washington called Lewis the team's "anchor."

In 16 starts, Lewis is 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA.

Lewis was on the disabled list from June 24-July 17 with the same injury. He made one start/appearance since being activated from that stint on the disabled list, taking a no decision in the Rangers’ 4-3 loss on Wednesday at Oakland (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R-ER, 2 BB, 3 SO). Lewis has gone 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA (40 ER/105.0 IP) in 16 games/starts for Texas this season.

Martin Perez was called up from Triple-A Round Rock earlier Monday. He made his major league debut with Texas this season during Lewis’ first disabled list stint, going 1-1 with a 5.54 ERA (8 ER/13.0 IP) in 4 games/2 starts. He made one relief appearance with Round Rock after being optioned on Wednesday, allowing one run in 2.0 innings on Friday vs. Omaha (40 pitches). Overall at the Triple-A level this season, Perez has gone 5-5 with a 4.59 ERA (44 ER/86.1 IP) in 16 games/15 starts.

With these moves, the Rangers still have a full 40-man roster.
