DALLAS (July 17, 2014) Baylor sophomore running back Shock Linwood was named a preseason candidate for the 2014 Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday. The award is given annually to nation’s top college running back.
Linwood is the leading returning rusher in the Big 12, after racking up a BU freshman-record 881 yards on 128 carries with eight TDs. The speedster from Linden, Texas, was named a 2013 Freshman All-America by four outlets and the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year by the San Antonio Express-News. In his first year on the field, he played in 12 of 13 games, while starting two. Linwood averaged 6.9 yards per rush, which ranked third best for a single season at Baylor. Linwood has already been named to the preseason All-Big 12 team and is also on the Maxwell Award watch list.
In total there are 53 running backs on the watch list, including five from the Big 12 Conference.
Last season, Baylor was one of nine teams to have two players listed among the candidates as Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin both made the watch list.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists on Nov. 18, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on Nov. 24. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on Dec. 1 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2014 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 11, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas, Texas, in February 2015.
The award, in its 25th year, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
