Midway Soccer Falls In State Semifinal

(April 20, 2012) -- The Midway girls soccer team could not overcome an early 3-1 halftime deficit, as Highland Park advances to the 4A state finals with a 5-2 win over the Pantherettes.

The Lady Scots scored its first goal in the 8th minute, then took a 2-0 lead after Sara Summers beat the Midway goalkeeper to the far post.

The Pantherettes responded with a goal from Bailey Johnson. She ripped a 30-yd free into the wind and the ball rolled right over the Highland Park keeper's fingertips. But Highland Parked answered right before halftime, with a goal into the upper right 90.

In the second half, Highland Park extended the lead to 4-1 on a Katie Martin goal from 25 yards out. Midway cut the lead to 4-2, thanks to a Josey Meyer chip from 25 yards right over the goalkeeper. But the Lady Scots put it away with its fifth goal of the match, a Megan Gittins one-touch rebound with seven minutes to play.

Midway ends the season at 21-5-4.
